Christmas lights are up and Rarotonga businesses have been busy creating a series of exciting events leading up to Christmas Day.

Several businesses on the island who have partnered with the Tropical Christmas promotion have been promoting the Christmas spirit in the community by hosting events and offering pre-festive season specials on products.

On Saturday Tropical Santa was at the Punanga Nui market, handing out lollies and balloons as well as having his photo taken with young children.

He also made the time to visit businesses who helped sponsor the Tropical Christmas promotion this year.

Santa also took the spirit of Christmas to Avarua township, but was disappointed when a few naughty children popped the balloons on his “sleigh”. However he will be at the Punanga Nui Market again this Saturday.

As part of the promotion, local businesses competed in a competition requiring staff to decorate their offices with a festive theme.

There was a particularly good response from all the CITC stores, with the different departments vying with each other to give their offices the best Christmas look.

Cook Islands Tourism’s office chose a traditional theme, using plants to create a Christmas bow. Jetsave Travel brightened their work space with a variety of decorations.

There were 11 entries in the office space competition, judged by Yvonne Heather and her team from Vonnias. Winners will be announced today.

Polynesian Rentals handed out free Christmas packs to individuals who rode green bicycles decorated with green balls through Avarua on Monday, while the the Islander hosted a “pizza magic” event.

The Light Up Your Window contest for businesses is scheduled for tonight starting at 8pm

There are two categories -  static-lights and decorations only, and the live section which will include people in the displays.

With nine confirmed entries it will be great night for families to take a drive through Avarua and see the town lit up in style.

Today CITC supermarket will host a beach party day. There will be spot prizes for a festive fun beach hat and spot giveaways for fun jandals and the best beach wear. Customers who spend $50 or more will go into the draw to win a Christmas hamper.

The fun includes a sausage sizzle, with proceeds going to the Creative Centre
