Restituto Tiangco has been extensively involved in the Philippines fishing industry and has diverse business interests in the Philippines and Indonesia.
His appointment was announced by Minister of Foreign Affairs Tom Marsters, who said honorary consuls fulfil important roles in promoting social, economic, trade and investment relations with local governments, private sector interests and non-governmental organisations.
He said the government is confident Tiangco’s appointment will further improve relations between the Cook Islands and the Philippines.
The Cook Islands is a member of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) – which both have their headquarters in the Philippines’ capital of Manila.
Tiangco will be able to support Cook Islands representatives attending ADB and WHO activities in the Philippines.
