Deputy prime minister Mark Brown’s words were fitting, “every year our Te Maeva Nui always impresses us, always.”
Brown praised the efforts of each team, acknowledging their efforts, costumes, dedication and good spirits in uplifting our culture.
Te Maeva Nui also merged with the 54th Constitution Celebration day on August 4, when the nation became self-governing in 1965. The day was marked at the National Auditorium on Sunday.
Cultural performances have always been significant to the Constitution Celebrations.
In 2001 the event was renamed Te Maeva Nui – a Maori name to capture the heart of the annual festival which translates as “the major or most important celebration”.
This national event continues to grow each year. It’s that time when people come together and showcase art, crafts, music, song, dance and local food - and of course our unique culture.
