Like a ship out of water

Vaka captain Sam Timoko (right) passes by the original hull of Marumaru Atua as it is moved from Avatiu to the Pa Ariki palace.  Ruined by a devastating fire in 2017, the hull was left by the CITC supermarket.

The remaining hull of Marumaru Atua was shipped to NZ last year for refurbishment; this month it returned home.

The Sailing Cook Islands president, who voyaged on the vaka, said the hull would be preserved for future generations at Pa Ariki Museum. “This is a historical piece of our vaka, part of our heritage we would like to maintain.”
