Come the first day of January, 12 months of festivities will commence to celebrate 50 years of self government in the Cook Islands, says the new celebrations coordinator.

Chair of the steering committee for the 50th Anniversary Celebrations Nick Henry says 2015 will be a year jam-packed with events to celebrate 50 years since the Cook Islands became self-governing in free association with New Zealand.

“Celebrations will be focusing on every Cook Islander being involved and celebrating our nation.

Many of the events will be taken to the outer islands to ensure they are included,he  said.

“It is going to be a 12 month celebration.”

A final plan for celebrations will be revealed mid next week after he has presented plans to Cabinet, he said.

As part of the latest budget $500,000 has bet set aside to fund events and the planning and marketing around them.

The 50th Anniversary Logo Competition will also be extended until next Friday to allow extra time for artists to ready their designs, Henry said.

Henry said despite a busy few months of planning ahead, he is excited for the programme to begin. For more information or to register an event, visit www.ci50th.com- Phillipa Webb

We are attending the July 20-22 Cook Island Medical Conference. We plan to stay for the Constitution Day festivities. Do you know a timetable for these festivities and if they extend beyond the actual Constitution Day- August 4?
