Stigma of shame hampers help

The stigma of shame surrounding domestic/gender violence and other social matters in the outer islands is one of the main reasons people are not seeking help from the justice system and other support organisations.

A 29 year old woman who appeared before Chief Justice Hugh Williams in the Cook Islands High Court last week was sentenced to 21 months in jail.

A woman charged with theft as a servant was given leniency and ordered to serve two years’ probation when she appeared in the Cook Islands High Court on March 8.

Without a safe and supporting environment for those suffering the effects of domestic violence and other problems, the outer islands will be confronted by the emergence of serious social issues that have so far remained hidden, says Punanga Tauturu Inc (PTI) co-ordinator Rebeka Buchanan.
