Ricky Carlson’s lawyer Mark Short said a 10-page psychiatric assessment showed he wasn’t competent to plead.
His client would be held in custody until police had viewed the report.
“We are asking for a month’s adjournment. The case is no longer a matter of police vs defence but it is about working together to find options,” Short said.
Police prosecution agreed.
Carlson is charged with one count of wounding with intent to injure and assault on a female, in a church in March.
Justice of Peace Bernice Manarangi adjourned the matter to August 15.
