A 20-year-old man was yesterday fined $50 for carelessly riding a bicycle.

Allan Tuariki admitted to the facts of the charge when he appeared before Justice of Peace Georgina Williams in the High Court.

He is alleged to have been swerving his bicycle while riding on the main road in Arorangi earlier this month.

Police prosecutor senior sergeant Fairoa Tararo said on May 3, Tuariki was riding his bicycle on the main road, while the victim who was driving a motorcycle was heading towards Titikaveka from Avatiu.

He said the defendant was swerving the bicycle and failed to check the road before riding across to the Edgewater Resort and crashing into a motorcycle.

Sergeant Tararo said the victim was admitted to hospital and the defendant denied swerving the bicycle then.

He said if the defendant agreed to pay reparation of around $400 and a fine, then they would agree to discharge the case.

He said the issue was that as a result of his carelessness, the defendant caused an accident resulting in the injury of a victim and damage to the motorcycle.

JP Williams sentenced the defendant with a $50 fine, $50 court cost and ordered him to pay reparation of $490.50.
