The Cook Islands prison and probation service will be renamed as a new agency, the Department of Corrective Services.

It was formerly known as the Ministry of Justice Prison Services.

The change comes about after the allocation of ministerial portfolios to three new ministers, with George Maggie taking on the role as minister of Corrective Services.

“This is a new government policy which my office together with other relevant agencies have been working on, in terms of putting together a new business plan.

“It’s inclusive of a new organisational structure and budget, to ensure that this agency is ready to function after the national budget is passed,” says public service commissioner Russell Thomas.

With the work of setting up the new agency almost complete, the probation division will be housed at the Cultural Development ministry.

“Once government is confirmed, we will move into advertising the head of ministry for the new agency,” says Thomas.

Government has also agreed to transfer the Pa Enua Special Project function from the office of the Prime Minister to Infrastructure Cook Islands and work on that is also progressing well, says Thomas.
