A 22-year-old man from Tupapa was acquitted of a charge of rape at a trial before Justice Doherty and a jury this week.

The trial began last Thursday, July 26.

The offence was alleged to have occurred at a party in the village of Ruatonga in the early hours of the morning on Saturday October 28 last year.

The complainant travelled from New Zealand to give evidence.

The jury retired for five hours before returning with a verdict of not guilty.

In a press statement, the defendant’s lawyer, Norman George said his client was surrounded by his parents and a large group of supporters and family who were “ecstatic” with the outcome. Acting for the Crown was senior counsel Cathy Bell.
