The man appeared in the Aitutaki High Court on Thursday afternoon, in relation to the death of a nine-year-old boy.
CINews reported on Thursday that a nine-year-old boy had passed away at Aitutaki Hospital on Saturday night. Initial police reports indicated that the boy had fallen from a truck.
The boy’s body was flown to Rarotonga on Sunday and a police investigation was launched.
A police spokesman said a team of four officers led by Detective Inspector Areumu Ingaua was now on Aitutaki, investigating the case.
“The police service has restricted the information about this incident for investigative reasons and would like to remind the public that due to this case now being before the court, there will be no further details provided or any elaboration entered into about the incident,” the spokesman said.
“The public is expressly asked to exercise sensitivity and respect for the victim's family and the necessary work being undertaken by the police and medical authorities, as part of the legal process.”
A forensic pathologist is expected to carry out a post-mortem examination and attempt to identify the official cause of the death.
