Outcome of burglary case still in doubt

As police battle an increase in reports of theft on Rarotonga, they are also facing attempts to have a high-profile burglary case thrown out of court.

In December a 52-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of stealing a safe from a business in Avarua. He has since appeared in court, where he was granted name suppression. He has yet to enter a plea and will reappear on 15 February.

Police confirmed they were “considering an application of withdrawal by the complainant”, and said that the matter would be reviewed at the next hearing.

“Of concern to the police is the crime of dishonesty, and accountability for it,” said a spokesman.

The case has gained the attention of international media. A story on the New Zealand Stuff website in December said the central figure in the burglary case was the brother of a successful New Zealand sports star.
