Police spokesperson Trevor Pitt said the suspect was arrested yesterday following rigorous investigation carried out by the Cook Islands Police Criminal Investigation Bureau.
However, he said investigation on the robbery were continuing, adding, “there is still quite some work left to do on the case”.
Pitt said police were grateful for the information they had received from the complainant and others regarding the case.
The owners of Mareko discovered the break-in on Monday morning.
The thieves got in by breaking louvre windows and then tore the safe from its fittings in the wall before making their getaway.
Stolen items included a safe containing shop takings, staff bonuses, family savings and passports.
Cook Islands Police earlier said they were following up several leads in their investigation.
