Taro leaf theft costs man dearly

A Rarotonga resident who pleaded guilty to stealing $100 worth of taro leaves was fined $200 when he appeared in the Avarua High Court yesterday.

Jimmy Vakatini Arai appeared before Justices of the Peace Carmen Temata, Mata Nooroa and Taepae Tuteru.

Temata told the court that after being accused of the theft, Arai had admitted that he had stolen the leaves at Takuvaine on November 13. He had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.

She told Arai that he must be punished as he had abused his position and as a result had abused the trust of the community.

“A conviction would denounce your conduct and deter both you and others from committing similar offences,” Temata said.  Arai was ordered to pay $200 reparation for the stolen taro leaves and $50 court costs.
