A big air and sea search is underway after a small boy was reported missing overboard from an inter-island vessel near Aitutaki.
Police Patrol Boat Te Kukupa and a number of local boars are engaged in the search and rescue mission. The alarm was raised by police at 8 o'clock on Wednesday evening, about a passenger missing from local vessel Lady Moana.
Police have confirmed the missing person is a 7-year-old boy, a passenger with family en route from Rakahanga.
A large number of local boats are part of the search efforts, and Air Rarotonga is also playing a role in the search.
A modeled map of the area near Aitutaki is being targeted by the coordinated efforts.
Police efforts are also being assisted by the Rescue Coordination Centre in New Zealand.
