A local man has been flown to New Zealand for urgent medical treatment after crashing his scooter on Happy Valley Road in Takuvaine last Sunday afternoon.

One eyewitness, who happened upon the scene just as emergency services were arriving, says the man was “lying in the gutter” with his legs towards the road.

The witness says they were “freaked out” by the incident and that the man was not moving.

Police closed a section of the road for some time after the crash, in order to carry out their investigations. They say alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the incident.

The man was admitted to Rarotonga Hospital with head and back injuries. However, police have now confirmed he has been transferred to New Zealand for further treatment.
