The first batch of Team Cook Islands participants in the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Australia, left the country yesterday.

The lawn bowls team, which dominates the 18-member national squad, will be training in Queensland in lead-up to the Games which start on April 4.

Cook Islands Sports and National Olympic Committee (CISNOC) acting secretary general Siniva Marsters has also left for the games to work on the team logistics and their arrival.

Team chef de mission John Paul Wilson is expected to leave the country for Queensland this weekend.

Team Cook Island will be led by sprinter Patricia Taea, who has been named the nation’s flagbearer at the Commonwealth Games.

“It was a tough decision to select from our athletes, given that all athletes performed well over the benchmark,” Wilson earlier said.

“Patty – as we all know her by, was selected on her achievement in 2017 after she attended the 2017 Pacific Mini Games, where she made history for the Cook Islands by winning the first-ever gold medal in the women’s 200m.

“She also went on to win a silver medal in the women’s 100m and she also broke the Cook Islands national record in November 2017 before the Mini Games, with a time of 11.97 seconds – first female to break the 12-second barrier.”
