Before the opening – the harbour is open to the public to inspect the $27 million Asian Development Bank funded upgrade.
The harbour open day will run from 9am to 3pm.
Contractors, McConnell Dowell Constructors Ltd, were awarded the project and began work in May 2011 and taking 17 months to complete.
Work on the project often required long hours and at certain stages night shifts, which required an incredible amount of effort, commitment and patience from workers. Due to the multidiscipline nature of the project, staff were exposed to, and gained competence in a range of construction techniques.
The result of the project is that Avatiu harbour now provides a greater capacity to cater for larger vessels and the deeper harbour entrance and turning circle allows for larger vessels to berth in the harbour.
