The Tupapa Maraerenga Culture group acknowledged Miss World Oceania Tajiya Sahay’s achievement at the pageant with a float parade on Saturday morning.
Leader of the team Phillip Strickland said the float represented Sahay as a member of their dance troupe. “This was a way for us to show how we are proud of her, and to raise money for the Australia relief appeal at the same time.”
The parade started from Tupapa, ending at Rangiura, and collected $500 in donations.
Bank of the South Pacific also raised a generous $942 towards the cause.
John Paul Wilson, the bank’s social club leader, said: “A sausage sizzle and kebab stall was held last Friday, and money collections from the staff contributed to the fund.”
The island of Mitiaro is preparing for the arrival of Sahay on the island today. A traditional welcome and festive event is scheduled to start from her arrival at the airport this morning.
This afternoon, the Police Service is to announce the total amount of money raised to assist the Australian Fire relief fund.
