In July this year, after working for various firms in Rarotonga and Australia, George, and his wife Maria, set up their own business, called Techtro Solutions.
Dream accomplished. But soon the Rarotonga man realised being his own boss was not as easy as it sounded.
“Nothing to begin with,” George says with a laugh when asked to identify the best thing about being your own boss.
“I can’t say it’s easy when starting up a business and working for yourself. A lot of hard work and long hours are involved.”
George says the couple moved back to Rarotonga after spending some years in Australia, with the ultimate goal of establishing a business of their own.
The need for an effective and reliable IT solutions service in the Cook Islands inspired them to venture on their journey.
“Owning our own IT business has always been a goal for us. It was somewhat inevitable and we knew that Rarotonga and the Cook Islands had room for another IT retail store with reliable IT services and support.
“Another reason we wanted to work for ourselves was to have the flexibility to spend more time with our children.
“So we opened Techtro Solutions in July 2016. We specialise in computer sales, repairs and managing small office networks.
“There’s nothing we can’t handle, especially when it involves something we are passionate about. I believe that’s the secret.”
Crucial to the new venture’s success has been honesty in the service they provide their customers.
Techtro Solutions not only specialise in computer repairs, upgrading and networking solutions, they also sell a range of computer packages, laptops, printers and accessories.
George says their service guarantees quality at a reasonable cost.
Microsoft-accredited, George has 12 years of experience in computer technology and has a wide reputation for providing a highly efficient service.
His aim is to keep things simple and affordable, focusing mostly on the small business market, where companies often don’t have a full-time IT person, but have full-time IT needs.
Techtro Solutions also caters to home PC users as well as businesses, offering free diagnosis on computer repairs among other services.
“As recently returned Cook Islanders from Australia, we brought with us knowledge and experience,” George says.
“Living abroad, I upgraded my skills in IT and Maria in managerial office administration. We complement each other in running our business.
“I look after the technical side of things while Maria focuses on looking after all our administration, accounts, etc.
“We stock a range of ink and toners and if we don’t have it in stock we are happy to order in for customers.”
Lately, Techtro Solutions has also brought in variety of portable bluetooth splashproof speakers as well as Dual USB 3.0 drives for android devices, phones, or computer tablets.
They will soon have JBL chargeable portable bluetooth speakers with a built-in rechargeable battery capable of charging mobile devices, as well as bluetooth headsets and earphones, and mobile phones.
George says it has not been smooth sailing, as the journey towards being his own boss has thrown up some challenges.
“The biggest challenge is keeping up with demand.”
George hopes Techtro Solutions will grow into a successful local business, and he’s well on the way.
“What better way to give back to our local people by starting a 100 per cent locally owned IT business that you know you can rely on.
“We hope to help our local people, not only here on Rarotonga, but the whole of the Cook Islands.”
Techtro Solutions is located at Panama in the former Raro Air Con building next to Ocean Fresh.
