Helen Goodyear may take a while to get a perfect picture for this article but she is quick as a flash in what she does the best.

A specialist in accounting software, Goodyear is taking her knowledge on QuickBooks to another level by establishing a business of her own in Maraerenga, Avarua.

Reckon Consulting, which specialises in software accounting services opened its doors for business this week.

From Jersey to Rarotonga, Goodyear has covered a journey of a thousand miles, and that big step towards this new direction is something she has thought about for a long time.

She spent years working for Reckon New Zealand Limited as its National QuickBooks trainer.

The main focus of her role was to provide classroom training, throughout New Zealand, for QuickBooks users and accountants.

This quickly expanded beyond New Zealand, leading her to Rarotonga to run specifically tailored training on the island for the widely popular programme.

“I have always felt completely at home in the Cooks.  I grew up in Jersey, a small island in the English Channel off the coast of France,” Goodyear said.

“It’s not much bigger than Rarotonga, where 100,000 people live – though with not one coconut tree!

“I first trained as an accountant in Jersey (a hub of financial activity in Europe) and those skills have carried me well.

“I have over 30 years of accounting experience; from working in chartered accountancy and offshore trusts in Jersey to setting up and running my own accounting and bookkeeping businesses in Jersey and New Zealand.

“I then taught QuickBooks accounting and bookkeeping in the classroom to accountants and end users of the software.

“All have been great experiences that helped lead me to running the successful accounting software consulting business here in Rarotonga today.”

Goodyear’s first Rarotonga training course took place in June, 2011.

It was a success which led to further courses throughout the rest of the year.

In quick time, she was making trips to Rarotonga every two months, for extended stays, to be able to facilitate the growing training need on the island.

After nearly two years of regular travel to the Cook Islands, Goodyear decided to make a permanent move to Rarotonga to consult and train on QuickBooks from a local base.

“I always feel very grateful to have been given the opportunity to come and live and work in the Cook Islands, and to have been given the opportunity to offer my services here and work with the happiest, friendliest people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.

“It is not always this way when you’re in my line of business!

“So having spent nearly four years (on and off) in Rarotonga and primarily working from a home office, I thought it was now the right time to set up a proper business base.

“So my new shop/premises give me, not only an ideal work/training space but, most importantly, a set location for customers, new and existing, to reach me when needed.” Her vision was to set up a one-stop accounting software shop where customers can get everything relating to the right accounting system for them, under one roof.

“If you are starting out in your business and need help choosing an accounting package, a retail Point of Sale (POS) system to suit your needs, or are already in business and would like to update your accounting software systems, we have the expertise and experience to help you make the right decision.

“And of course, we also will soon have a wide range of training courses available.”

Goodyear has worked with a variety of businesses in Rarotonga, Aitutaki and Atiu from small sole traders to retail shops, trust companies, resorts and government departments.

“We have a very good understanding of the varying needs of individual businesses but, mostly importantly, the needs of businesses in the Cook Islands.

“We look forward in the future to expand our services and to continue to provide the Cook Islands with good quality accounting, bookkeeping and consulting services.”
