New Zealand born musician/engineer/producer, Evan Short will depart our shores with a bang with a final disc jockey performance at Trio’s Garden Bar tonight.
For the past five years Short has worked and created his own drum and bass electronic music under the name of DJ Kiljoy.
“It’s fast drums, lots of bass, still very like techno, it’s basically a blend of reggae, dance hall, hip hop, techno, house, and UK street culture.”
Short started music at the age of three when he was taught to play the piano by his grandmother who was also a tutor of the musical instrument.
As a teenager he watched ‘Ready to Roll’ on television.
“I remember seeing Aerosmith’s music video ‘Walk this way’ and thought yes, I want to do that.”
He mastered the guitar through high school, when dance electronic music started taking off underground and around the world, “kids at school would pass around tapes of the music.”
Short was intrigued by the sounds.
“When you are a guitarist and you can hear another band on the radio you know what they are playing and you know what the sounds are coming from.
“But, when you hear techno and rave music for the first time, you have no idea what’s making those sounds”
His interest escalated and with friends who had the computer gear back then, Short started writing electronic music.
He went on to study audio engineering at college in Auckland for three years.
In 2000, Short was forced to quit his job as a studio engineer because his boss would not let him have a Saturday off to go on tour to perform gigs domestically with his friend Matt Harvey.
They had just put their first album that basically was the start of the duo’s drum and bass Concord Dawn.
So what is Concord Dawn?
“It’s the name of the planet where the Mandalorian’s come from in the movie Star Wars,” Short said.
“We were absolute Star Wars nerds back in the day.”
He parted ways with Harvey and the group in 2010.
Short has resided on the island for three years and will return to New Zealand next week.
He has been producing music over the years but said, “I’ve released more music since living here.”
Tonight at Trio’s Garden Bar, DJ Mr E will warm up the crowd for a couple of hours followed by DJ Kiljoy’s selection of drum and base sounds.
