Global R&B superstar Jason Derulo is just one of the millions of people around the world “TikToking” to a song produced by a Cook Islands teenager.

Joshua Nanai, a year 13 student at Manurewa High School in New Zealand, goes by the stage name Jawsh 685. He first uploaded his catchy song “Laxed (Siren Beat)” onto YouTube in 2019.

But it was when it was shared on video-sharing social networking platform TikTok last month that it went viral.

From Japan to Italy, the song has been used in more than 32 million videos on Tiktok.

On YouTube alone, Laxed has been viewed more than 10 million times and Nanai now has 73,000 subscribers.

It has been streamed on Spotify five million times and is one of the most popular TikTok songs in 2020.

The island themed song starts with Nanai, 17, who is of Cook Island and Samoan descent, shouting 685 – in reference to Samoa’s area code.

R&B superstar Jason Derulo, with famous songs including Trumpets and Other Side, jumped on the beat with his own TikTok video.

The global sensation was so taken by the tune he went a step further and used it in “Savage Love”, which was only released on Monday and of course gave the young artist producing credit.

With everything that’s going on right now, Page 1 Management’s Liz Smith, who represents Nanai, said he would be in touch with Cook Islands News for an interview – as soon as he finds a ‘laxing moment.
