‘Love me’ – that’s the message from RnB star Fia Esene’s award-winning hit single, as he prepares to win the hearts of Cook Islands fan in an outdoor concert next month.

The On The Rocks nightclub is bringing one of Polynesia’s biggest pop stars, Fia Esene from America’s Got Talent, to town for club management’s first-ever outdoor concert.

On The Rocks has applied for a licence to sell alcohol outside in its beachside carpark, on the night of September 27.

Fia was Hawaiian Island Music Awards winner for song of the year, “Love Me”, music video of the year, breakout artist of the year, and male artist of the year.

He is playing the big Dry Diggings Festival in Placerville, California, this weekend. When he comes to the Cook Islands next month, he will bring with him his entire 10-piece band for two-and-half days in the sun – and one big gig.

It’s the first time the new owners have put on a big concert, and they’re excited. “This is the first outdoor concert that we’ve held, out in the carpark,” said nightclub director Eirangi Marsters.

“Fia is Polynesian and his music, I think, is RnB that resonates well with the melodies that we are familiar with in the islands,” she said. “He has performed in various countries bringing a mixture of island vibes, R&B and soul.

“We’re hoping for 500 people, both in the premises and in the carpark.”

The night will open with local string bands and a Battle of the DJs – performances that Marsters says will be welcomed by the local audience and musicians alike.

The stage will be outside, in the carpark. Those who can pay $60 for VIP admission will also be outside, stage-front. General admission tickets will be $30, and those people will be further back in the actual club.

OTR is hosting the concert in collaboration with Niu FM and Aotearoa Entertainment. Marsters said concerts were “a natural part of our business evolving to include various events”.

OTR previously hosted a successful Fight Night, she said, so this year they were moving on to a concert.

“We anticipate this concert to be epic because not only will the patrons be entertained by Fia Esene and his band but we have local string bands to open the show and the Battle of the DJs to close the night after the concert.

“So it is a full night of awesome entertainment and talent.”

Marsters said the night would kick off at 7pm; the concert would run from 8-10pm, and then the DJs would take over.

Tickets should be available this week from Tex Mart Outlets, TEM Store outlets, Origin Energy and OTR.
