Reviving the Cook Islands legacy of spreading the gospel is part of an upcoming mission for a number of local youth.

Eight students from the Takamoa Theological College will be joined by youth from Mexico, Canada, Germany, and Singapore for a trip to Southeast Asia – where they will travel to Thailand and Myanmar to perform charity work.
“The focus is on compassion,” said Steven Sio, a native of Vanuatu who will be leading the group during the mission.
Over the course of their travels, the group will be working in orphanages and with the poor, he said.
In Myanmar, they will be heading into tribal areas.
The two-month long trip runs from December 4 to February 3.
Leading up to the departure date, the group will take part in training sessions to prepare for the overseas voyage.
“It’s about reviving the missionary movement out of the Cook Islands,” said Hinrich Kraenzlin, leader of training at YouthWith a Mission (YWAM).
Soon after the arrival of Christianity in the Cook Islands in 1821, locally trained missionaries set off to spread the gospel around the South Pacific.
From 1839, missionaries have travelled to Samoa, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, and Papua New Guinea, among other nations.
“The Cook Islands were very prominent in taking the gospel to those areas,” said Principal Reverend Iana from Takamoa Theological College. “We are partnering with YWAM to do what we are good at, and we want people to understand that this is starting again.”
Kraenzlin said his organisation will be having an information session on the upcoming trip tonight at 7pm  at YWAM’s Vaimaanga headquarters.
