Frequently Asked Questions

Please bear in mind that Cook Islands News is a relatively small organisation and our main function is to produce a daily newspaper. This is what pays the wages and the bills. The website is a service provided free of charge for overseas Cook Islanders and others who are interested in the Cook Islands. It is kept up-to-date by people whose main job is producing the daily. We do not have the resources to hire someone to work exclusively on the website.

Where can I see back copies of Cook Islands News?

Unfortunately these are not available online. Hardcopy newspapers are available for viewing at our office in Rarotonga.

Why don't you put classified adverts online?

We don't have time. Classifieds change daily with some repeated others new. Since we only update once a week it would be a time consuming job to keep track of everything.

TOP

Why don't you update more often?

  1. We want people to BUY the newspaper, not read it free online - that's what keeps advertisers happy and pays the bills!

  2. Cook Islands News online is provided free as a service to overseas Cook Islanders and others who are interested in the country but it is not intended  to take the place of the hardcopy Cook Islands News.

Why do you allow anonymous letters to the editor?

We don't publish anonymous letters, we have a name and contact details for all letters that are used. We do, however, allow people to use pen names. This is necessary to allow people to be able to express their opinions without fear. Regrettably some of our politicians have been known to victimise people who hold different points of view to their own.

Why don't you have more outer islands  news?

Visiting the outer islands is time consuming and expensive and we don't have the manpower or other resources.

TOP

Why don't you have more fancy stuff (video and audio) available?

We have started putting small video files on the site and while these have been downloaded a large number of times we haven't actually had any feedback about whether people enjoy them or not. We are considering putting short clips of local music online but we won't be uploading whole albums. Local musicians have a hard enough time making ends meet. If there's a demand we'll ask local recording studios to sell albums online.

Where can I find out about where to stay on Rarotonga?

Start by checking the adverts on the CINews Online website. Many smaller, motels and private homes are featured here. You could also go to the Tourism Cook Islands website or the yellow pages section of Oyster, our local ISP.
