Gospel Day - The Nuku

October 26 is Gospel Day, a national holiday celebrating the arrival of Christianity in the Cook Islands through the London Missionary Society in 1821. The Tahitian (Raiatea) missionary Papeiha, as part of the LMS, brought Christianity to Aitutaki in that year and from there to Rarotonga in 1823.

The Gospel Day celebrations involve the performing of a religious drama by each of the seven Rarotongan CICC (Cook Islands Christian Church) branches - Titikaveka, Ngatangiia, Matavera, Avarua, Nikao, Arorangi and the Takamoa Theological College. Each church takes it in turn to host the event.
